1. Waste that is put into a landfill decomposes over time producing methane gas.
2. Gas wells in the landfill collect this gas.
3. A pump is used to extract the methane gas from the landfill.  It is sent through a series of filters before the gas is used to fuel the engine.

Santee Cooper's Green Power Program is different than most programs.  In 2001, Santee Cooper's Board of Directors authorized the establishment of a separate fund for the collection of revenues from the sale of Green Power.  So, all, 100% of the Green Power revenues goes to funding future renewable energy projects.

Renewable resources replace themselves naturally so they produce little or no air pollutants or waste. Landfill gas is the only renewable energy source that, when used, actually removes pollution from the atmosphere.

Adding an additional $6 per month to your electric bill, the equivalent of the monthly purchase of 200kWh of electricity, has the same positive environmental impact as:

• Planting an acre of trees in national forests*
• Not driving for nearly 3 months*

Besides, it's just the right and smart thing to do for the environment.
